Jo Beth's "ANA" and "DNA antibody" tests were positive.    She
had antibodies to her own DNA?  THAT was very nasty to learn.

Scans confirmed  the pleurisy and pericarditis.  The doctor
prescribed an anti-inflammatory
(Naproxen 375 mg. 3X day), to
reduce the irritation from all the body battles, and an
immune-suppressant
(Plaquenil), to help bring peace to the
body battle world.   He also told Jo Beth to get lots of rest.

Jo Beth had never heard of lupus.  She was dumbfounded when
the doctor very firmly directed her NOT to read up on her
disease.  He said that it would only worry her unnecessarily.

Of course,  Jo Beth ignored this patronizing nonsense, and
went to USC's Norris medical library the very next day to try to
gain some familiarity with lupus.   So there, doctor!
Say WHAT?

Where Jo Beth ignores her new doctor's advice.
Study Questions:
How can you live with antibodies to
your own DNA?
Do you think Jo Beth's irritation with
her doctor's directive is justified?
Many autocidal
conditions can
cause a positive
ANA test.  Lupus is
only one of them.
A positive DNA
antibody test is
more strongly
indicative of lupus.
