Jo Beth's third neurologist, Doctor Z, was extremely congenial
and pleasant.   He was fascinated by her symptoms.  He asked
to do a spinal tap to see whether CNS (Central Nervous System)
lupus was causing the jerks, which he thought was the case.

"What are the odds that, if lupus is the cause, the fluid
will show this?", asked Jo Beth.
    "I'd say about fifty percent."
"Will you advise different treatment if lupus is the cause,
versus if it isn't?", she was wise enough to ask.
    "Well…no."
"Then, why would I choose to undergo that very painful
    test?"

Doctor Z realized rather shamefacedly that there was no point
in doing the test, in terms of benefits to Jo Beth.
There was no known remedy.  She'd just have to jerk.
