Jo Beth had a pain in the back.  It really, really hurt in her
lower back.

Jo Beth's rheumatologist ordered scans of her lower spine, and
discovered that the disks had been partially eroded--likely as a
result of lupus bone necrosis (death).  There wasn't anything to
be done.  It was just another thing she'd have to learn to live
with.

Good posture and exercise both helped.  Jo Beth, though, could
no longer stand for any length of time.  She could walk with no
problem, but standing in one place was extremely painful.
Going to a store and waiting on line became an ordeal at times.
Jo Beth was terribly embarrassed when she occasionally had to
resort to sitting on the floor.  People thought she was crazy.
