| Over a period of months, Jo Beth saw several doctors, but none could help. She was desperately discussing this very private matter (get it?), with her lupus doctor. He suddenly asked: "I know this sounds odd, but do you have any relatives from Turkey or Japan?" It did sound odd, and she didn't. The doctor explained: "I think you might have Behcet's syndrome, the "Silk Road disease". It's almost unknown in the Americas, but it's really common in Turkey and Japan." WHAT!? Another disease beSIDES lupus?!!! How would they find out if this was the cause of her problem? The doctor said: "Treat it as if it's Behcet's, and if it gets better, it is." It did, and it was. The symptoms didn't go away--no such luck--but they calmed way down. She could wear undies again! Was she the luckiest girl, or what? |
